Workers at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District hotel, represented by UNITE HERE Local 274, have begun a strike to demand higher wages, better staffing levels, and improvements to health care and pension benefits. The action comes as the city prepares for an expected increase in tourism in 2026.
The strike follows the recent contract ratification by workers at the Hampton Inn Philadelphia Center City. That agreement included significant gains in wages, healthcare, and working conditions. The Hampton Inn is one of eight Center City hotels negotiating new contracts with UNITE HERE Local 274.
Many employees at the Wyndham participated in a previous strike at the same hotel in November 2021 that resulted in improved pay and workload terms.
Monica Burks, a restaurant server at Wyndham, stated: “We’re striking for a fair contract, for fair wages. We’re standing up to the bosses to gain our respect and integrity back.”
The Wyndham Historic District is owned by RLJ Lodging Trust and operated by Aimbridge Hospitality. Aimbridge also manages the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown, where workers recently held a four-day picket line; negotiations there are still ongoing.
In addition to actions in Philadelphia, workers affiliated with UNITE HERE Local 11 have started a strike at Hilton Garden Inn Hollywood. This hotel is also owned by RLJ Lodging Trust and operated by Aimbridge Hospitality. Contract talks between Hilton Garden Inn Hollywood staff and UNITE HERE Local 11 are underway.
