Washington Post tech workers have voted to certify their union, marking a significant development in the media industry. The formation of the Washington Post Tech Guild was initially announced on April 7, 2025. This initiative has received backing from the Washington Baltimore News Guild, The NewsGuild-CWA, and the Campaign to Organize Digital Employees (CODE-CWA).

The newly formed guild aims to address issues such as equity, inclusion, fair compensation and benefits, job security, and just cause protections. It is part of a broader trend among media tech workers advocating for improved working conditions.

“Today we win a seat at the table for all tech workers at The Washington Post,” said Luke Connors, a software engineer. “Together, our union will secure stronger protections and access to benefits that will help us do our jobs better.”

Lisa Gusty, another software engineer with twenty-five years at the Post, expressed pride in the union’s accomplishments: “The things we accomplished together and the relationships we built while organizing our union are what I am most proud of… those efforts will lead to real benefits and protections for more than 300 tech workers.”

Mike Stemle, principal architect at the company, voiced optimism about future job security: “I have mourned too many colleagues being laid off who were doing good work… Our union gives me hope that we may be able to achieve some job security at long last.”

Product manager Sara Carothers highlighted the sense of community fostered by organizing: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the growing wave of tech workers exercising our right to unionize… Now we’ll get to use that collective power to achieve lasting improvements at the Post.”

The Washington Post Tech Guild plans to begin bargaining with management soon for its first collective bargaining agreement.
