United Steelworkers (USW) International President David McCall has expressed strong opposition to the recent budget bill passed by Congress. In a statement, McCall criticized the legislation, claiming it favors corporations and the ultra-wealthy over working families.

“Republicans in both houses of Congress this week showed their true colors, passing a budget bill designed to enrich the already obscenely wealthy at the expense of the working class,” McCall stated. He argued that the bill does not address efficiency or spending control and fails to support families facing rising costs.

McCall also highlighted concerns about an increase in national debt due to the bill. “Instead, congressional Republicans are adding more than $3 trillion to the national debt, just so that greedy corporations and the 1 percent can amass even more wealth,” he said.

He further described the bill as “irresponsible” and “immoral,” pointing out cuts in health care funding, manufacturing investments, and community support that workers depend on. McCall warned against potential distractions from these issues by Republican lawmakers in favor of their wealthy supporters.

“In the coming days and months, Republicans will try to distract us from the cruelty they inflicted on our nation in service of their billionaire backers,” he added. “But we won’t be fooled. And we won’t forget.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers across various industries including metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply, energy production, health care, public sector roles, higher education, tech and service occupations.
