The University of Washington has initiated a confidential survey named “U.S. Mariner Mental Health & Wellbeing – 2025.” The survey will remain open until September 16, and members of the Seafarers International Union (SIU) are encouraged to participate.
Mariners from all sectors of the U.S. maritime industry are invited to take part in this anonymous survey, which takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete online. Eligible participants include credentialed mariners working on U.S.-flagged vessels, such as licensed and unlicensed mariners, cadets, and pilots.
The survey covers topics related to mental health, wellbeing, job satisfaction, and experiences aboard vessels. All questions except for screening criteria are optional. Participants’ data will remain confidential with no identifiable information being collected.
Dr. Marissa Baker from the University of Washington leads this effort, following up on a similar study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Findings from this research will be shared with relevant stakeholders to aid in developing solutions for mariner mental health and wellbeing.
Mariners can contribute by sharing the survey link with colleagues or others involved in maritime industries. For further inquiries about the survey, contact Dr. Marissa Baker at the University of Washington.
