Earlier today, Florida State University faced an active shooter incident, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries.

In response, the United Faculty of Florida and the Florida Education Association have expressed their concern for those affected and highlighted the ongoing problem of gun violence in schools. They emphasized the need for more than just condolences from policymakers.

“No parent, guardian or loved one should have to contend with the news that someone they love is injured or will no longer be able to come home to them,” stated the organizations.

Both associations are reaching out to faculty, students, and graduate assistants at the university to ensure their safety and provide necessary support during this challenging time.

Florida has been heavily impacted by gun violence, with FSU being the latest in a series of school shootings across the nation, following incidents in Dallas and San Antonio in recent days. The associations stressed the need for action to prevent such tragic events from becoming routine.

The organizations are appealing to policymakers, saying, “Moving forward, we are asking policy makers for more than thoughts and prayers.”

The Florida Education Association is the largest professional employee association in Florida, representing a diverse range of educational professionals and retirees. The United Faculty of Florida represents faculty across state universities and colleges, as well as graduate assistants at select universities.
