Unite Here Local 11 announced that it reported $37 million in total receipts for the 2023 fiscal year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
According to the LM-2 filing with the U.S. Department of Labor, UNITE HERE Local 11 reported having 36,665 members at the end of the 2023 fiscal year. This figure represents a significant net increase of 16,271 members compared to the previous year’s membership, following several years marked by fluctuations due to contract campaigns and organizing drives. The full membership tally and year-over-year change are detailed in the summary membership section of the official LM-2 report.
As of December 31, 2023, UNITE HERE Local 11 disclosed a cash balance of just $3,563, despite managing finances for over 36,000 members. This amount reflects an increase from the prior year’s $1,651 cash on hand but remains low relative to both the union’s membership size and total financial operations. The cash position is documented under the “Statement A—Assets and Liabilities” section.
By December 31, 2023, Local 11 declared $11,810,667 in marketable investments and $7,534,999 in fixed assets in its LM-2 disclosure. These figures sharply contrast with the union’s minimal cash reserves reported for the same period. These investment and asset figures are significant when compared to the union’s available cash, raising questions about liquidity management and financial priorities. These amounts are shown in the financial statement section of the report.
During 2023, UNITE HERE Local 11 paid out $4,441,800 in strike benefits. This major expenditure stands out given the union’s low cash balance at year’s end. These strike benefit disbursements constitute a substantial portion of Local 11’s total annual outflows and are recorded in the “Schedule 15—Other Disbursements” section of the union’s LM-2 filing.
UNITE HERE Local 11 represents over 32,000 hospitality and service workers in Southern California and Arizona. The union includes employees from hotels, restaurants, airports, and stadiums. It is known for its active organizing efforts as well as contract negotiations and strike campaigns. These activities correspond with major expenditures reported under representational activities ($6,790,211) and political activities and lobbying ($2,156,868) in their LM-2 filing. As an affiliate of the larger UNITE HERE international union, Local 11’s structure and spending reflect its high engagement in worker advocacy as well as contract enforcement and public campaigns.
