With a significant presence in Virginia, UNITE HERE Locals 23 and Local 25 have expressed their backing for Abigail Spanberger in her candidacy for Governor of Virginia. These unions represent over 8,000 members employed in a variety of sectors, including education, transportation, hospitality, and gaming.
Samuel Epps, UNITE HERE Local 25’s political director, endorsed Spanberger, highlighting her commitment to Virginia’s working-class citizens: “Working people in Virginia deserve leaders who will make life more affordable and bring smart economic growth and good jobs to the Commonwealth, not play political games with our workforce while paying lip service to the White House,” he stated. Epps further emphasized Spanberger’s track record in defending rights and fighting for working families, which he believes makes her an ideal candidate for governor.
Spanberger, acknowledging the endorsement, expressed her gratitude for the union’s efforts in advocating for Virginia’s workforce. “I am grateful for UNITE HERE’s work to uplift the voices of Virginia workers, and I’m proud to earn their endorsement to serve as the next Governor of Virginia,” she said. Spanberger promised to focus on worker rights and develop an economy that creates sustainable jobs across Virginia.
The endorsement also received support from union members like Akylah Loving, employed by Aramark at Old Dominion University. Loving remarked on the transformation since joining the union: “When we won our union, that changed my life because I have a voice at work and don’t have to endure disrespect.” She expressed enthusiasm in campaigning for Spanberger, hoping to amplify worker voices in her community.
