Pittsburgh, PA / Hannover, Germany – The United Steelworkers (USW) and the German Industrial Union of Mining, Chemical, and Energy Workers (IGBCE) have called for a new industrial compact that prioritizes workers. They urge policymakers and industries in the US and Europe to focus on long-term worker-centered strategies.

“Workers and their communities must be at the center of the global economy that is now too often driven by profit alone,” stated USW International President David McCall. He emphasized the need for an agenda that secures good jobs, strengthens industries, and invests in necessary skills and infrastructure.

A joint letter from McCall and IGBCE President Michael Vassiliadis outlines a transatlantic action plan. It advocates for reliable industrial policies promoting stable investments and union jobs, substantial public-private investment in infrastructure, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, fair trade rules targeting unfair practices abroad, and stronger cross-border cooperation to enhance labor standards.

Michael Vassiliadis highlighted the importance of fairness in global supply chains: “Our economies are deeply interconnected, and we must strengthen those ties with a new focus on high labor standards.” He stressed building resilient industries that respect workers’ rights without resorting to protectionism.

The unions warned of potential setbacks for Western industrial nations if they do not adopt a coordinated approach focusing on clean technologies and manufacturing leadership. They pointed out risks such as underinvestment and rising competition affecting workers in the US, Europe, and Canada.

“This is a global fight for fairness, dignity, and a sound future for all,” McCall said. He called on policymakers and industry leaders to support this initiative alongside workers who are ready to contribute.
