The United Auto Workers (UAW) has expressed satisfaction with the results of the New York mayoral primary race, highlighting their early endorsement of candidate Zohran Mamdani. UAW President Shawn Fain stated, “The working class is done with business as usual. We were proud to be the first union to endorse Zohran because it’s time for a political movement that puts the working class first.”
Fain extended congratulations to Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla for his effective field operation and praised Mamdani’s campaign efforts. “Congratulations to Zohran for building a movement, and congratulations to the working-class New Yorkers for showing the world that when we unite and stand up nobody can stand in our way!” Fain added.
Brandon Mancilla emphasized the importance of labor’s influence in politics, saying, “The days of taking labor’s vote for granted are over. It’s time for labor to think about a bigger vision that lifts up and includes all working-class people.” He commended UAW members’ dedication to advocating for an affordable New York.
UAW Region 9A had been proactive in supporting Mamdani since December 2024, being the first union to endorse him due to his focus on addressing New York’s cost-of-living crisis. His platform included initiatives such as building affordable housing, freezing rents, making buses fast and free, and providing universal childcare—aligning with UAW’s goals for making life more affordable for working-class residents.
On May 30, UAW Region 9A reaffirmed its backing by urging NYC UAW households to rank Mamdani first on their ballots. This move marked them as the only major union taking such a stance in support of Mamdani.
