The President of the United States has issued a proclamation recognizing May 22, 2025, as National Maritime Day. This annual observance commemorates the first transoceanic voyage by a steamship, which was completed by the S.S. Savannah in 1819. The proclamation highlights the vital role of the United States Merchant Marine and merchant mariners in both national defense and economic strength.

Merchant mariners are acknowledged for their readiness to support military operations and their contribution during World War II, where they suffered significant casualties. Their efforts in transporting goods and supporting global trade are also emphasized as key components of American economic strength.

President Donald J. Trump noted his administration’s focus on reestablishing maritime dominance through an Executive Order aimed at spurring investment in shipbuilding, eliminating outdated regulations, and expanding training for merchant mariners. These measures are intended to secure supply chains and protect trade routes.

The proclamation calls upon Americans to observe National Maritime Day by displaying the U.S. flag at homes and communities, with a request for all ships under the American flag to dress ship on this day.

“Today, we celebrate the men and women of the United States Merchant Marine and all those who support our maritime industry,” stated President Trump. “Their dedication upholds our national defense, fuels our economy, and continues a proud tradition that has shaped our Nation since its earliest days.”
