Over 40 chapter leaders from the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) recently participated in a two-day training session at the association’s headquarters. The training aimed to prepare these leaders for the upcoming 2025-26 school year by focusing on building union power.
The training covered various aspects, including member organizing and effective meeting strategies. Participants also had the opportunity to hear from representatives of the National Education Association.
HSTA President Osa Tui, Jr., emphasized the importance of equipping chapter leaders with necessary skills to enhance their leadership roles within schools across Hawaii. “While the state president and leadership may be the face to the general public for the Hawai’i State Teachers Association, it is our school-level leaders who are the face of HSTA at their worksites,” Tui stated.
He further added, “Making sure our SLLs are well prepared for their roles is one of the main goals of holding our chapter-level Start of Year conferences, and we appreciate these colleagues who are going above and beyond to support their faculty members with issues that arise throughout the year.”
