Amid recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in California, a message from the Superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District has resonated with students, families, and educators. The statement was delivered by Moisés G. Aguirre, Ed.D., addressing concerns about immigration enforcement and emphasizing community values.

In his message to Local 150—Administrators Association of Sweetwater Union in San Diego, CA—Aguirre expressed solidarity with public agencies, elected officials, and community organizations following an incident involving U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. Aguirre stated that the treatment of Senator Padilla by federal agents “does not reflect the values we hold as Americans,” and he condemned it unequivocally.

The Superintendent acknowledged the heightened concern within the South Bay community regarding immigration enforcement. He reassured that the district remains committed to supporting Latino and immigrant communities, highlighting that 70% of their student population is Latino and 10% is Filipino. Aguirre emphasized pride in their binational identity and its contribution to school diversity.

Sweetwater Union High School District does not collect or maintain information on immigration status. Aguirre assured that board policies and administrative regulations are designed to handle such matters sensitively. He affirmed that maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for every student is a top priority.

Living near the border provides a unique perspective on balancing law enforcement with empathy, according to Aguirre. He stressed that “every person deserves dignity” and called for compassionate law enforcement practices.

Addressing those who choose to protest, Aguirre urged peaceful assembly inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez. He encouraged building a community rooted in unity, diversity, and justice.

Aguirre concluded with a call for collective action: “Together, we can rise to the challenge and uphold the democratic values that define us.”
