Members of the United Steelworkers (USW) District 12 and Local 9424 are participating in the “Las Cruces for Labor” May Day event at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The event commemorates International Workers’ Day, a celebration of workers’ struggles and achievements in pursuit of dignity, equity, and justice.

“On this May Day, we – the workers who build, produce and sustain our communities – stand united and proud,” said Gaylan Prescott, Director of USW District 12. “We’re here to demand recognition of our collective power and to reject the grip of the billionaire class on our democracy. This is about agency over our work, our values and our future.”

The annual event unites labor union members, students, and community leaders to advocate for economic justice, worker rights, and opposition to corporate greed. “This gathering is a testament to the strength and resilience of working people,” Prescott added. “We will not be silenced. We honor those who came before us by continuing their struggle – for a future without kings, billionaires or unaccountable authority.”

USW members highlight that May Day is more than a celebration; it is also a call to action. With workers facing threats from union-busting corporations and regressive policies, union members are reaffirming their commitment to organizing and mutual support. “Our solidarity is our greatest strength,” said a statement from USW Local 9424 members. “Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we can build a world where justice and dignity are not just ideals, but realities for all.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers in various industries, including manufacturing, metals, mining, and more, with a growing number in tech, public sector, and service roles.
