This weekend, ICE agents reportedly attacked and arrested peaceful protestors and observers in Los Angeles. Among those detained was SEIU California President David Huerta. The incident occurred as President Trump deployed the California National Guard to the city, despite opposition from state and local officials. This action has raised concerns about the use of military forces to manage civilian demonstrations.
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) expressed strong opposition to these developments. “There is nothing more fundamental to the labor movement than the idea that an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” a statement from CWA emphasized. The organization highlighted historical instances where armed militias were used against workers’ efforts to exercise constitutional rights, noting that many affected individuals have been immigrants.
CWA called for immediate action: “This assault on our freedoms must stop now. We cannot allow the government to be used as a weapon against workers.” They demanded both the release of David Huerta and the withdrawal of National Guard troops from Los Angeles.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions between federal authorities and local leaders regarding protest management and civil liberties.
