Longtime actor Sean Astin has begun his term as president of SAG-AFTRA, becoming the first second-generation leader of the union. Astin, known for roles in films such as The Goonies, Rudy, and The Lord of the Rings series, discussed his new responsibilities and personal motivations in a recent podcast episode with SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

Astin reflected on how his career experiences have shaped his perspective on union leadership. “For me to be the first second-generation president of the union, everything [in my career] that has led up to this, all the wonderful opportunities that I’ve had and the work that I’ve done, frames what I’ve done in a different light,” said Astin.

During their conversation recorded within Astin’s first 45 days in office, he spoke about how his mother Patty Duke’s legacy as a former Screen Actors Guild President influences him. He also addressed key issues facing SAG-AFTRA members today, including health and pension plans, artificial intelligence concerns, and efforts to modernize member experiences.

The discussion is part one of a two-part podcast series. Part two is scheduled for release on November 20, 2025. Listeners can find this episode and others by visiting the SAG-AFTRA podcast page or subscribing through platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
