In a legislative development in New York, SAG-AFTRA has announced the passage of an updated post mortem right of publicity bill. The bill was unanimously approved by both the New York Assembly (A.8882) and the NY Senate (S.8391).

The organization expressed gratitude to Senator Mike Gianaris and Assemblymember Tony Simone for their roles in championing the bill. They also acknowledged Assemblymember Catalina Cruz for her strong support.

This legislation requires prior consent from families before using digital replicas of deceased performers in expressive works. SAG-AFTRA stated, “Our work protecting performers and their families continues.”

SAG-AFTRA represents around 160,000 professionals in various entertainment and media fields, including actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, and voiceover artists. As an affiliate of the AFL-CIO with offices nationwide in Los Angeles and New York among others, SAG-AFTRA is committed to securing protections for its members into the future.
