As Juneteenth approaches, members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) across the United States are preparing to commemorate the day that marks the end of slavery in the country. The union emphasizes that freedom and justice are not merely ideals but ongoing goals to strive for in workplaces and communities.
The RWDSU has historically been at the crossroads of labor and civil rights movements, acknowledging that racial and economic justice are closely linked. The organization views Juneteenth as more than a remembrance; it is a call to action reminding everyone that the fight for dignity, equality, and opportunity continues. Unions are highlighted as crucial tools for workers to achieve these objectives.
This year, RWDSU members continue to build on this legacy. Recent achievements include nursing home workers at Diversicare Pell City in Alabama forming a union last month and efforts against increased line speeds in the poultry industry. These actions demonstrate solidarity beyond demands for fair wages and safe working conditions; they emphasize respect and basic human dignity on the job.
The transformation within workplaces persists through contract negotiations, organizing initiatives, and solidarity acts that enhance workers’ lives, particularly Black workers who have played significant roles in both civil rights and labor movements.
Juneteenth serves as an occasion not only for reflection but also for action among RWDSU members. By uniting their efforts, they aim not just to secure victories at bargaining tables but also to advance justice more broadly.
