Pulitzer Prizes honor Guild members across multiple categories

The Pulitzer Prizes have recognized several members of The NewsGuild for their contributions to journalism. The prestigious Public Service award was given to Kavitha Surana, Lizzie Presser, and Cassandra Jaramillo at ProPublica for their reporting on the deaths of pregnant women due to delayed medical care in states with strict abortion laws. This comes as ProPublica journalists continue to negotiate their first contract with the nonprofit.

The Washington Post’s staff received the Breaking News Reporting award for covering the assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Reuters journalists were honored with the Investigative Reporting award for their coverage of fentanyl regulation issues.

The Wall Street Journal staff was recognized with the National Reporting award for documenting Elon Musk’s political and personal changes. The New York Times earned the International Reporting award for investigating the conflict in Sudan. Doug Mills from The New York Times won the Breaking News Photography award for capturing a photo during Trump’s assassination attempt.

Finalists included many Guild members. Notably, journalists from The Boston Globe and The New York Times were Public Service finalists, while Associated Press staff were finalists in Breaking News Reporting for covering Trump’s assassination attempt and security lapses.

Investigative Reporting finalists included teams from both The Wall Street Journal and Associated Press. Explanatory Reporting finalists featured Alexia Campbell, April Simpson, and Pratheek Rebala from the now-closed Center for Public Integrity.

Local Reporting saw Mike Reicher, Lynda Mapes, and Fiona Martin of The Seattle Times as finalists for uncovering state construction spending failures. National Reporting finalists included Jennifer Gollan and Susie Neilson of the San Francisco Chronicle for exposing issues related to police pursuits.

International Reporting finalists came from both The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, while Commentary saw recognition for Gustavo Arellano of the Los Angeles Times and Jerry Brewer of The Washington Post.

Sara Holdren from New York Magazine was a finalist in theater Criticism, while Editorial Writing included writers from both The Boston Globe and The New York Times. Breaking News Photography finalists included photojournalists at Agence France-Presse documenting life in Gaza.

Feature Photography saw Associated Press staff recognized as finalists for their work depicting daily life in Gaza amidst conflict.
