On May 9, 2025, the Postal Board of Governors announced David Steiner as the next Postmaster General. Steiner is undergoing an internal vetting process and is expected to assume his new role in July.
The American Postal Workers Union (APWU) has expressed significant concerns about the selection process used by the Postal Board of Governors. “Various news reports indicate that this BOG, currently consisting of two Democrats, two Republicans, and one Independent, would only consider a new PMG who had the approval of President Donald Trump,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. He added that if these reports are accurate, “the BOG has shamelessly and outrageously abdicated their independent responsibility in selecting a new PMG.”
Dimondstein highlighted that the 1970 Postal Reorganization Act was designed to prevent political interference in USPS operations. The act followed a major postal strike aimed at freeing the service from political patronage.
The APWU is investigating further into Steiner’s selection and plans to share more information as it becomes available. Concerns have been raised over Steiner’s connection with FedEx, which competes with USPS in package delivery and advocates for postal privatization. Dimondstein criticized this choice by stating it was akin to choosing “a fox to guard the hen house.”
Despite changes in leadership, Dimondstein affirmed that “the goals of the APWU remain the same.” The union opposes any moves towards privatization or undermining public postal services but supports policies strengthening USPS operations.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary of founding its Post Office this July, postal workers and APWU members continue advocating for robust public postal services. They emphasize defending universal service obligations and improving service quality while safeguarding workers’ rights.
Dimondstein stated that while they welcome Mr. Steiner’s commitment to maintaining USPS independence, he will be judged by his actions: “Words must be met with deeds.”
