Virtual casting has significantly altered the audition landscape, a change accelerated by the pandemic but already underway. Jenny Jue, a veteran casting director with credits including “Inglourious Basterds” and “The Brothers Sun,” discussed this evolution on a recent episode of the SAG-AFTRA podcast.

Jue noted that self-taping was becoming prevalent even before the pandemic: “It seemed as though everything I was working on was filming elsewhere. There were no day players or supporting roles to read in person, and even sometimes for the lead roles, many of those actors were on another set, and had to self-tape anyway.”

While self-taping provides new opportunities, it also introduces pressures such as quick turnaround times and unclear instructions. Despite these challenges, Jue emphasized that casting directors take virtual auditions seriously. She explained her commitment to watching every tape and advocating for actors behind the scenes.

Listeners can subscribe to the podcast on various platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify to hear more insights from industry professionals like Jue.
