The Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) has issued a statement responding to President Trump’s recent executive order affecting federal union contracts.
OPEIU President Tyler Turner expressed concern over the order, issued on March 27, which eliminates collective bargaining and union rights for workers at more than 30 federal agencies. The administration claims the measure is necessary under the framework of “national security.”
Turner described the order as “an egregious attack on federal workers and the labor movement at large.” He emphasized that the intention behind the order is “obvious: silence workers, force obedience and strip federal unions of the resources needed to fight back against this illegal and unjust action.”
The union leader reaffirmed OPEIU’s commitment to standing with its members and other unions nationwide in countering what he terms as the Trump administration’s “blatant attempts at union busting.” Turner called on Congress to intervene and halt what he sees as the undermining of workers’ rights across both public and private sectors.
OPEIU’s statement underscores a broader concern among labor organizations over proposed changes that could impact collective bargaining protections that have been longstanding among federal employees.
