NYSUT President Melinda Person has issued a statement regarding reports that the Trump administration will release nearly $6 billion in withheld funding to public schools. This decision comes after NYSUT joined a lawsuit with various school districts, parents, teachers’ unions, and nonprofit organizations demanding the funds be released.

“The reported decision to release these funds affirms what we knew all along: this was an unlawful maneuver that jeopardized the educational futures of millions of children across this country,” Person stated.

She emphasized the broad opposition from different parts of the country and political spectrum, underscoring NYSUT’s core belief that “Public schools unite us.” She noted that if any administration attempts to bypass its responsibilities to public schools and their students, there will be collective resistance.

While celebrating this development, Person assured continued vigilance from NYSUT. “NYSUT will continue to stand on the front lines, defending our schools and students and ensuring that every child has access to the high-quality education they deserve,” she said.
