NYSUT President Melinda Person has addressed concerns regarding the 2025 New York Regents exams. Reports indicate that the Biology and Earth Science exams included questions not aligned with approved curriculum materials.

“We heard many reports from our members that this year’s Biology and Earth Science exams contained topics and questions with unforeseen, off-curriculum material,” Person stated. She emphasized the importance of aligning tests with state-approved standards to prevent confusion and maintain confidence among students and educators.

“NYSUT stands firmly behind our educators and students,” she continued. “Watching students who have worked hard and prepared throughout the year struggle with off-topic materials is disappointing and frustrating for our educators.”

The organization is collaborating with the State Education Department (SED) to prevent future discrepancies. “We are actively working with SED to ensure this doesn’t happen again and to create better alignment moving forward so every student has the opportunity to demonstrate what they’ve learned,” said Person.

The Regents exams took place in mid-June, and districts, educators, and students are currently receiving their scores.
