Today in Los Angeles, labor leader David Huerta, who serves as President of SEIU California and SEIU-United Services Workers West, was injured and detained during an ICE raid. He was reportedly exercising his First Amendment right to observe and document law enforcement activity at the time.

The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) has joined SEIU and the broader California labor community in demanding Huerta’s immediate release. The CFT expressed support for Huerta’s actions, emphasizing the importance of “righteous activism and peaceful protest” as fundamental components of a functioning democracy. They commended his advocacy efforts on behalf of union members, immigrants, and working people.

Criticism was directed at ICE’s operations, described by CFT as “indiscriminate and cruel,” arguing that they do not contribute positively to the lives of Californians. The statement called for an end to such raids, asserting that they disrupt communities and harm working families.
