The labor movement is highlighting its primary value of solidarity while calling for an end to what they describe as the Trump administration’s ongoing actions against immigrant workers, the right to organize and protest, and the services provided by federal government workers.

The accusation extends to President Donald Trump’s treatment of immigrant workers, including instances of abduction and detention without proper legal proceedings. These activities, they claim, are carried out in unmarked facilities and distant detention centers, with some detainees sent to a famous prison in El Salvador.

Recent actions in various states have added to the urgency of these claims. In Washington state, for example, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents reportedly detained Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez, a leader in the berry-pickers union Familias Unidas por la Justicia, and SEIU Local 925 member Lewelyn Dixon, a University of Washington lab tech, as well as conducting a raid on a roofing company, arresting 37 individuals.

Similarly, in Massachusetts, federal immigration agents detained Rumeysa Ozturk, a graduate student at Tufts University and SEIU Local 509 member, on her way to break her Ramadan fast. This occurred following her op-ed in support of Palestine.

In Baltimore, sheet metal worker Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a SMART Local 100 apprentice with a disabled child, was sent to El Salvador’s prison system in what was later described by officials as an “administrative error.” In New York, Mahmoud Khalil, a recent Columbia University graduate and United Auto Workers Local 2710 member, was detained for protesting actions in Gaza.

Allegations also include pressure on universities to suppress dissent, resulting in suspended students and disciplined faculty. The mass dismissal of federal workers and threats to their bargaining rights, the labor movement claims, are aimed at dismantling government functions and creating a culture of fear.

In response, the labor movement urges resilience against these measures.
