Workers at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a nonprofit focused on humanitarian aid, are pushing for a fair first contract through their union, IRC Workers Unite/OPEIU. The unionization efforts began in 2023 and now include IRC offices in 11 locations across the United States. Despite these efforts, negotiations have faced delays.
“Since 2023, IRC offices in 11 locations have unionized with various OPEIU locals across the country,” according to a statement from IRC Workers Unite/OPEIU. The organization claims that management has “consistently delayed and undermined the bargaining process.”
The workers are advocating for living wages, good benefits, and reasonable working conditions. They highlight that while top executives at the IRC earn nearly $5 million collectively, many frontline workers struggle to earn a living wage.
“In fighting for a fair first contract, IRC Workers Unite/OPEIU is committed to creating a sustainable future for IRC workers — a future where one job is enough,” states the union’s communication.
The union urges supporters to email IRC management demanding an end to negotiation delays and actions perceived as anti-union. They seek a fair contract that reflects the contributions of those advocating for refugees and asylum seekers.
