The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced its theme for World Maritime Day for the years 2026 and 2027. The theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” was endorsed by the IMO Council during its 134th session held in London from July 7 to July 11. This two-year theme emphasizes the organization’s commitment to assisting member states in implementing policies through technical support and training.

Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated, “The theme transmits a clear message of our commitment to ensuring regulations are put into action and providing the necessary technical assistance for implementation to Member States. This ultimately strengthens the confidence that global rules agreed at IMO can lead to safer, more secure and environmentally sound shipping worldwide.”

The theme focuses on translating regulations into tangible results, highlighting the importance of turning global regulatory frameworks into national legislation and day-to-day operations within the maritime sector. It also underscores the role of capacity-building, technical cooperation, and knowledge sharing in driving this transition.

For over seven decades, the IMO has developed a comprehensive framework of international maritime conventions. However, gaps in national legislation and enforcement have been identified by the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS), indicating a need for improved regulatory effectiveness.

The chosen theme aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure; SDG 13 on climate action; SDG 14 on life below water; and SDG 17 on partnerships. It supports broader global efforts towards sustainable development through effective maritime governance.
