Heather Garcia’s journey in education began in Quincy, Gadsden County, where she spent ten years as an elementary ESOL teacher. A grant from the Laura Bush Foundation allowed her to pursue further education at Florida State University, earning a master’s degree in Library and Information Studies with a focus on children’s literature.

Garcia transitioned into a media specialist role at W. T. Moore Elementary School in Tallahassee, where she has worked for twelve years. She describes this career shift as “the right choice of all right choices.” Her library is a space where students can enjoy reading without pressure, which Garcia calls the “best place at school.”

Legislation requiring classroom books to be reviewed by certified media specialists highlighted the importance of the library as a consistent resource for students. Despite challenges, W. T. Moore’s library remained accessible to students.

One of Garcia’s favorite annual activities is engaging students with the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr., teaching them about civics through voting on their favorite books. She advises her students to “vote with their hearts and vote with their minds.”

Beyond her work as a media specialist, Garcia actively participates in civic matters, speaking at Leon County School Board meetings and chairing the legislative committee for the Leon County Teachers Association (LCTA). She encourages fellow educators to voice concerns through union support.

Garcia emphasizes that being a media specialist involves more than routine tasks; it includes developing collections, staying updated on literature trends, and collaborating with teachers.

Her story reflects many educators’ experiences across Florida who strive to make positive impacts through collaboration and advocacy.
