The Hawaiʻi State Teacher Association (HSTA) is collaborating with Design Thinking Hawai’i to offer a new initiative aimed at integrating design thinking into educational settings. The program, known as the Design Thinking Laboratory, seeks to provide teachers with the tools needed to incorporate innovative and entrepreneurial mindsets into their classrooms.

According to the organizers, “Design Thinking aims to transform Hawaiʻi by introducing innovative and entrepreneurial mindsets and technologies to teachers and students.” This approach is intended to prepare educators and learners for future challenges by equipping them with relevant skills.

The laboratory will bring together educators interested in human-centered design or design thinking. Participants will work collaboratively to develop interdisciplinary lesson plans suitable for classroom implementation.

An in-person course will be held at HSTA headquarters on July 26 and 27. During this two-day session, teams of three to five teachers will engage in activities based on traditional design thinking methods from Stanford d-School’s open-source process. The goal is for these interdisciplinary teams to acquire practical skills necessary for creating lesson plans that can be immediately used in classrooms.

Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook, pen, and sample lesson plans. While computers are optional, they may aid in the development process.

The training sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the HSTA conference room located at 1200 Ala Kapuna Street, Honolulu, HI 96819.
