Andy Markus, the Education Support Professional of the Year, addressed the 104th Representative Assembly, sharing his journey and passion for union work. “Thank you for this opportunity to speak with you today,” Markus began, acknowledging the dedication of education support professionals present.
Markus reflected on his early involvement in union activities. “I started doing union work at the ripe age of three years old,” he said, recalling summers spent campaigning alongside his parents. His upbringing by union member parents instilled strong values that guided him in his roles as a head custodian and union leader.
He recounted a memorable interaction with a student who confided in him about being gay. “It was a powerful moment and reminder of how much students rely on the caring adults around them for support,” Markus shared.
Markus emphasized the importance of educators being politically active. “We have to be political, plain and simple,” he stated, urging advocacy for better funding and resources for education support professionals (ESPs). He highlighted initiatives like the NEA ESP Bill of Rights as efforts gaining traction nationwide.
Reflecting on recent challenges, Markus quoted Mister Rogers: “Often out of periods of losing come the greatest strivings toward a new winning streak.” He discussed Utah’s collective bargaining ban and efforts to repeal it through coalition-building and organizing.
In closing, Markus reaffirmed commitment to fighting for public schools’ protection. “The fight is never over—we can and we must continue to protect our public schools.”
