The Daily Kos staff has ratified its first union contract with the Pacific Media Workers Guild. Negotiations began in late 2022 but faced interruptions due to cuts in 2023 and 2024. The workers remained persistent, even filing unfair labor practice charges and addressing unjust terminations. Their efforts culminated in securing a contract that aims to raise industry standards and provide long-term protection for their newsroom.

The newly established agreement introduces significant changes, including the end of at-will employment. The contract ensures “just cause” provisions, guaranteeing fair treatment regarding discipline or termination. Employees are assured the right to remote work, with the option to work from any location within the United States.

The contract includes strong measures to prevent the use of AI from displacing union jobs. Salary structures have been made transparent, with minimums and meaningful raises outlined, including a minimum annual raise of 2.5% for 2026 and 2027. Roles from staff reporters to engineers will have clear salary ranges. Additional benefits include six weeks of paid vacation, comprehensive sick leave, and full salary parental leave. An Equity Council with paid release time will focus on diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Furthermore, the agreement sets out formal processes for grievances and arbitration and a commitment to progressive discipline.

Jaclyn Casto, a guild member since 2022, expressed relief, stating, “It’s been this thing that’s been looming over all of our heads and having it squared away is going to be such a relief. We’re proud to finally have a seat at the table.”

The contract has been ratified by the members and will remain effective through 2028. It sets a new standard for digital media and political journalism establishments, demonstrating the effectiveness of collective organizing efforts amidst challenges.
