At a time of political instability and government shutdown, Claude Cummings Jr., President of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), has issued a statement emphasizing the importance of honoring military members for their service and sacrifice. Cummings noted that those serving in the armed forces are integral parts of communities across the country, describing them as “our friends, family, and neighbors” who share common values such as justice, truth, and fairness.
Reflecting on recent nationwide protests, Cummings stated: “Just a few weeks ago, our country invoked the memory of its founding when we declared, in nearly every city and town, that we will not bow to a king. Those protests brought out millions of people who, despite being characterized as ‘anti-American’ proved the opposite, we are profoundly proud of our country. We love its people and its promise for the future. We will not abandon it. And we stand, united, with those who serve to defend it.”
The ongoing government shutdown has led to significant challenges for military personnel and veterans. According to Cummings’ message citing information from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), 37,000 DVA workers have been furloughed. This situation is affecting several key services including the G.I. Bill Hotline and programs like Veteran Readiness and Employment Program. Grounds maintenance at 157 VA national cemeteries has also been impacted.
Cummings highlighted additional hardships faced by veterans due to limited access to mental health resources and reductions in aid programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which have forced some military families to rely on food pantries.
“The truth of military service is that these are workers, and, like all workers, they deserve protections both on the job and in retirement,” said Cummings. “It is incumbent on us, as those who believe in union solidarity, to extend that solidarity to our siblings in uniform. They deserve more than just our thanks; they deserve our advocacy and support, now more than ever.”
He further noted efforts by veteran-led organizations mobilizing against cuts to healthcare services for veterans and against deployment of active-duty troops within cities.
“Thank you to our veterans for the sacrifice and service they exhibit,” Cummings concluded. “May each of us take their examples to heart and use the tools at our disposal to let freedom ring from sea to shining sea.”
