Members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and other journalists have faced challenges while covering protests in Los Angeles. They have reportedly been targeted by law enforcement using less-lethal rounds and tear gas, as well as being detained.
In a statement, CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. emphasized the importance of the work these journalists do in keeping the public informed. “This violent intimidation is unacceptable and threatens one of our most fundamental rights as Americans – the right to a free press,” he stated.
Cummings further expressed gratitude towards journalists and media workers who risk their safety to deliver news. He called on law enforcement leaders to ensure the protection of these individuals and to investigate any actions that hinder their work. “Attempts to dodge accountability and evade responsibility put all of us in danger,” he added.
The CWA represents workers across various sectors, including telecommunications, customer service, media, airlines, health care, public service, education, manufacturing, tech, and more.
