A broad coalition of labor unions, non-profit organizations, and local governments from across the United States has come together to legally challenge the Trump administration’s executive reorganization of federal agencies. This group, which includes entities from several states, is represented by organizations such as Democracy Forward and Altshuler Berzon LLP.
The coalition includes the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), several AFGE locals, the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) along with its Local 1000, and various other national and local entities. Collectively, they have filed a case, AFGE v. Trump, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
A statement from the groups involved highlights the significance of this legal action, noting it is the most substantial challenge to the President’s attempt to restructure the government without legislative approval. The coalition argues that Executive Order 14210, which mandates federal agencies submit for approval their Agency Reductions in Force and Reorganization Plans, infringes upon the constitutional principle of separation of powers. The executive order is seen by these groups as an attempt to bypass Congress in making sweeping changes to federal agencies.
The plaintiffs seek judicial intervention to halt the implementation of this order, emphasizing that any structural changes to government entities should be the domain of Congress.
Statements from the plaintiffs’ counsel and further details on the complaint can be accessed as the case progresses.
