City Bureau staff members have announced their intention to form a union with The NewsGuild-CWA, as of July 1, 2025. Employees from various departments within the organization have unanimously signed cards and a mission statement supporting this initiative.

The newly formed City Bureau Workers Guild has asked for voluntary recognition from the organization’s leadership. Should this request be denied, they plan to pursue an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board.

The mission statement of the City Bureau Workers Guild emphasizes four key organizing principles: sustainability and responsibility, ethics and accountability, anti-racism and intersectionality, and respect and solidarity. These principles aim to ensure a stable future for City Bureau’s staff and programs while upholding high ethical standards and promoting diversity.

An informal celebration is scheduled at Nighthawk on July 1 from 6-8 pm, open to press, community members, and supporters. For more information or to speak with key members of City Bureau staff, interested parties can contact [email protected] or call 773-357-7096.

The City Bureau Workers Guild consists of journalists, program staff, and operations workers united in their effort to foster a sustainable and equitable workplace. They are organizing with the Chicago News Guild under The NewsGuild-CWA.
