The California Senate and Assembly have put forward a budget proposal that has sparked various reactions. CFT President Jeff Freitas expressed support for the legislative leaders’ decision to reject proposed 3% budget cuts to the University of California system, describing it as a defense against what he termed “the Trump administration’s assault” on higher education.

Freitas praised the inclusion of $44 million in the budget for community college part-time faculty office hours. He emphasized that this funding is crucial for providing individualized attention to community college students.

However, Freitas voiced concern over proposed cuts to Medi-Cal, stating, “An attack on health care is an attack on education.” He highlighted the potential impact on families, noting that when parents are unable to access healthcare, their children’s education suffers. Although some severe cuts from the May Revise were rejected, Freitas warned that the current proposal still endangers vulnerable Californians.

In light of economic uncertainties and challenges from the federal government, Freitas urged California leaders to prioritize working families and invest in the state’s future. He called for immediate action to support workers and children in California.
