Assistant Principal Aidan Vigil has dedicated his career to education, focusing on building strong relationships with students and colleagues. Born in Fairfax, Virginia, with a few formative years spent in Honduras, Vigil was inspired by his high school coaches and his father, Dan Vigil, a finance officer with the CIA. His experiences and influences shaped his path toward a career in education.
Vigil’s career in education began with a special education teaching position at Herndon Middle School. Before securing this role, he faced a challenging job market after graduating from Radford University, where he studied Philosophy and Religious Studies and Social Science Education. He started coaching sports at Herndon High School, his alma mater, while searching for teaching opportunities.
Reflecting on his early teaching years, Aidan attributes much of his learning to Dr. Darren Minarik, an undergraduate professor whose course in special education emphasized that “what’s good for exceptional learners or students with disabilities is good for everyone.”
After gaining experience at Herndon Middle and Herndon High, Aidan transitioned to administration, becoming assistant principal at McLean High School. He later moved to Longfellow Middle School, where he values working with younger students. He emphasizes the importance of building connections, stating: “You have to make sure they know you’re there for them.”
In addition to his professional achievements, Aidan is committed to family life. He and his wife Brittany, who is also in education, are raising three children. Outside of work, Aidan volunteers with his children’s sports teams and is pursuing a doctorate at the University of Virginia, focusing on special education teacher retention.
Vigil remains active in educational leadership, partaking in organizations such as the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and the Fairfax County Federation of Principals, Supervisors, and Administrators. He acknowledges the changes in education post-pandemic, noting, “Teaching is totally different because of technology.”
Overall, Assistant Principal Aidan Vigil continues to prioritize relationship-building and adapting to the evolving educational landscape, aiming to make a lasting impact on students and fellow educators.
