On April 30, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform approved a proposal to cut retirement benefits for postal and federal workers. The measure passed with a narrow vote of 22-21 and will be included in the broader reconciliation package. House Republican leaders aim to bring the package to a full vote later this month.

APWU President Mark Dimondstein criticized the proposal for its impact on postal and federal workers. “Make no mistake, Congress’ outrageous proposal intends to finance tax-cuts for the oligarchy with money from postal and federal workers’ paychecks,” he said. Dimondstein called for immediate action to protect pensions.

With Republicans holding a slim majority in the House and Democrats united in opposition, APWU Legislative and Political Director Judy Beard emphasized the need for support. “The time to act is now to save our pensions,” she stated, urging APWU members to contact their representatives. “We are actively engaging with lawmakers on this fight, but need each and every APWU member to pick up the phone and call your member of Congress. Tell them to keep their hands off our pensions!”

The upcoming full House vote will be crucial in determining the future of these proposed cuts.
