The Human Relations Department of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) is emphasizing its commitment to providing support and resources beyond contract enforcement. The department has successfully trained over 5,500 members, activists, stewards, and officers.
This year, the department plans to continue offering training sessions for local and state branches and provide a Regional Resource Assistant to help address their issues. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) remains available as a resource for postal employees and their families, offering counseling and referral services by mental health professionals. “It is a formal, non-disciplinary program that is free and voluntary.”
In addition to supporting union members in the military through a nationwide coalition, the APWU aims to promote equality within society. “The struggle for equal rights, equal opportunity, and justice extends beyond the workplace into our neighborhoods and communities.” The department will strive for equality in 2025 while protecting the rights of those they serve.
The Postal Employees’ Relief Fund (PERF) provides relief grants to postal employees whose homes are destroyed or left uninhabitable due to natural disasters. These grants help victims reestablish residences after such losses.
In 2025, guidance on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) process will be provided through an informative manual formulated by the union. Although representation is not offered at this time, this resource aims to assist members with understanding EEOC procedures.
An upcoming Human Relations Assembly in Houston from June 12-15 will offer extensive training sessions on these subjects. “We encourage all locals to have someone in attendance,” states the department’s communication.
