AGMA members have ratified a new three-year contract with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, following approval by AGMA’s Board of Governors on July 28, 2025. The agreement introduces wage increases ranging from 2% to 4.25% in the first year and 3% in each of the subsequent two years. It also guarantees workweeks under a 40-40-39 structure to provide stable employment.
Production assistants will see a significant pay raise, with their weekly rate increased by 14.5%. The contract also brings higher rates for overtime, penalties, travel overtime, per diems, and special provisions such as Extraordinary Risk. For the first time, AGMA delegate work is formally recognized and compensated in the collective bargaining agreement.
The agreement introduces new protections for production staff by setting limits on overtime to support work-life balance. Additionally, staff will receive a one-sixth bonus for days that involve both load-in and performance duties.
Equity and inclusion measures are included in the contract. Artists working on visas will now receive employer-paid unemployment benefits—a first for this group—and there is a commitment to implement paid parental leave with alternative work options by early 2026.
Dancer wellness and artistic integrity are addressed through provisions like a three-cast guarantee for better workload distribution, improved casting timelines with advance notice for touring and engagements, and formalized processes for evaluation and reengagement. An Artistic Advisory Committee has been established to give artists more input into artistic decisions.
Health-related enhancements include an increase in the wellness stipend by $100 with expanded allowable uses, improved advance scheduling with at least two days’ notice guaranteed, and maintained safeguards such as temperature controls and bathtub access for dancer recovery.
“This agreement delivers meaningful gains in wages, benefits, and protections, with guaranteed workweeks, across-the-board raises, and significant improvements for both dancers and production staff. The contract also breaks new ground with a commitment to paid parental leave, new benefits for Artists on visas, and stronger equity and wellness provisions—all reflecting a forward-thinking, inclusive approach to collective bargaining.”
“Thank you to the negotiating committee and congratulations on this agreement!”
