AFSCME President Lee Saunders has voiced strong opposition to the recent actions of Congress, following the release of text from House committees regarding a new reconciliation bill. In his statement, Saunders criticized what he described as a plan by “Congressional extremists” to provide significant tax breaks to billionaires at the cost of community welfare.
“This language makes it crystal clear: Congressional extremists are charging ahead with a plan to shower billionaires with massive tax breaks at the expense of our communities,” Saunders stated. He expressed concern that this approach would “substantially gut Medicaid” and potentially deprive over 13 million individuals, including low-income workers, seniors, and people with disabilities, of necessary healthcare services.
Saunders also highlighted additional concerns about proposed cuts to food assistance programs. He emphasized that AFSCME members are closely monitoring developments and preparing to take action. “We’ll be in the halls of Congress and holding events in communities across the country to sound the alarm on how damaging these cuts will be,” he declared.
The statement reflects AFSCME’s commitment to opposing measures they believe will negatively impact public services and vulnerable populations while benefiting wealthy individuals.
