AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler has expressed strong disapproval following a Supreme Court decision that permits the firings of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) members by former President Trump. In her statement, Shuler described the ruling as “a gift to union-busting CEOs and a slap in the face of every worker in this country.”
Shuler criticized the decision for ignoring precedent and allowing what she termed “unjust, anti-worker firings” to stand. She argued that this undermines workers’ rights to organize, collectively bargain, and assert their rights in the workplace.
“The Court undermines workers’ ability to organize, collectively bargain, and demand their rights on the job,” Shuler stated. She further warned that the ruling disrupts the long-standing independence of federal agencies, potentially leaving workers vulnerable to political influences from the executive branch.
Shuler concluded by emphasizing that working people should have a fair opportunity to join and form unions under existing laws. “Today, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court turned its back on workers to give even more power to politicians and wealthy CEOs,” she said.
