AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler has voiced concerns over President Trump’s recent nominations to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). This follows the dismissal of former board member Gwynne Wilcox, which Shuler claims undermined the agency’s independence and functionality.
Shuler criticized the administration’s decision, stating, “By attempting to stack the NLRB now—after leaving workers hanging out to dry without a functioning board for months—the White House is playing political games with working people’s lives.” She argued that if the administration were serious about protecting workers’ rights, it would not have dismissed Wilcox in what she described as an “unprecedented and unlawful action.”
The AFL-CIO leader emphasized the importance of an independent NLRB, noting its role as “the sole decider of labor rights for more than 100 million workers in this country.” According to Shuler, Wilcox was removed because of her decisions that did not align with presidential preferences. She called for Wilcox’s reinstatement to restore the agency’s independence and ensure fair hearings for both workers and employers. Until such reinstatement occurs, Shuler considers any new nominations to be part of a compromised board.
