The 2024-2025 Advocacy, Civil Rights, and Equity (A.C.E.) Fellowship has concluded its program year with a series of impactful workshops, legislative advocacy efforts, and leadership development activities. The fellowship aimed to advance equity in education through purposeful programming and mentorship.

The program featured influential guest speakers including Kevin Vick, Liz Waddick, Kooper Caraway from CEA leadership, Dr. Hilario Benzon from NEA’s Human and Civil Rights division, and Dr. Asia Lyons, an education consultant. These sessions addressed crucial topics such as inclusive language practices, racial justice on a national scale, and mental health challenges faced by BIPOC educators.

Throughout the fellowship year, participants engaged in self-care strategies designed to balance advocacy demands with personal well-being. “We can’t pour from an empty cup,” was a key takeaway for fellows focusing on sustainability in their work.

In February, educators of color gathered at the State Capitol for Black History Month to advocate for diversity and inclusion in Colorado’s public schools. Taurean Hamm delivered a significant speech highlighting representation and resilience during this event.

The mentorship component marked a vital aspect of this year’s fellowship. Veronica Wilder and Patrick Jiner joined Taurean Hamm as mentors for new educators entering the program. Wilder reflected on her role saying it was about building capacity rather than having all the answers: “What impacted me the most was witnessing the transformation of all the Fellows.”

Looking ahead, A.C.E. Fellowship alumni will have opportunities to continue their involvement through mentoring roles or by participating in a second-year option that deepens their organizing skills.

Those interested in joining the upcoming cohort are encouraged to apply for the 2025-2026 A.C.E. Fellowship.
